This past year I have had the amazing opportunity to put some work together for a show at the Columbus Museum of Art. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would have art hanging in a museum, just feet away from master artists like Picasso, Monet among many others. It all started about a year ago when I was awarded one of 4 Greater Columbus Arts Council Fellowship Grants. I never thought I even had a chance, but figured why not apply? Doesn't hurt anything, right? Its been an absolute dream to be able to make these pieces and have a budget to make of them what I would like without having so many restrictions. I had so much anticipation leading up to the show, and worried how my work would stack up next to the others in the show, but coming to the opening and seeing everything put together put my mind at ease, I honestly couldn't be happier about the work I made or how things all turned out. I know it is going to be a huge challenge to carve time to continue working on my projects with the arrival of this new baby just around the corner, but I truest that it will all somehow work out. It is just such an essential part of my well being to continue to create my work.
My Little Art Connoisseur. I really wanted Thomas to come to my opening. It is really important to me that he knows I have a separate identity from motherhood. Its also good for him to be exposed to a little culture now and then too! Help to round him out a little. Right now if he had his way it would be dump trucks all day long!
My 2 biggest fans. I couldn't have done it without them! Being a mother has definitely made making art more challenging, but it has also changed the way I work in good ways too. I feel like I am much more efficient with the small blocks of time I do have, because I know it is so limited.
All of the work in the show looked great. It was all quite cohesive and the curator did a great job. I went back to the show this past week to take more pictures and it was quite a surreal experience seeing so many people coming through the gallery and investigating my work. Being able to show in a museum exposes your work to a much larger audience than art gallery does. I consider myself very blessed to have had this opportunity and I can't wait to see what other kind of doors it opens for me. I know one thing, it has definitely given me more confidence and motivation to keep going.
