Robert Smithson was a groundbreaking artist who in the 1970's experimented with using the landscape as his art media, creating "earthworks" His most most famous piece being The Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake. Seeing that most of my readers are residents of the great state of Utah, I thought this would be a great opportunity to encourage you to take the time to go see it. This piece has been a very important work in the art world, and is known all the world over. The crazy thing is that many residents of Utah don't even know about it!I took a trip up to the spiral jetty a few years ago. It is a few hours from Salt Lake, by the Golden Spike, the Last link in the transcontinental railroad. ( Which if you haven't been you might as well hit 2 birds with one stone!! Make it a history lesson for your kids and yourself)
The Jetty is interesting, but is made truly impressive because of the surreal landscape of the Great Salt Lake. Smithson chose this location specifically because of its unique features. If this work was placed in any other lake it would loose a lot of its appeal. The pink tint of the water and the white salt, which looks almost like snow make you feel like you are in a completely other-worldy place. So if you are in the area, take the chance to go see it! If you have seen it, tell me what you thought about it!
